ARTISTS: Shirin Neshat and Izhar Patkin
BIOS: Neshat was born in Iran. Her photographs, videos, and films explore social issues in her home country, often questioning the role of women in Islamic society. Among her many awards, Neshat received the first International Prize at the 1999 Venice Biennial. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the world and appeared at film festivals including Edinburgh, Sundance and Tribeca. She lives in New York.
Izhar Patkin was born in Israel. He is a visual artist known for working in narrative form. His work not only tells stories but reinvents the structure and technique of visual narrative itself. The results are paintings and sculptures making imaginative use of materials and highly complex visual metaphors. Patkin's work is included in many permanent collections, including those of The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He lives in New York.
