Matisse Bustos Hawkes, Associate Director, Communications and Engagement

Matisse leads WITNESS’ global communications, media relations and supports strategic partnership development and our efforts to reach influential networks of human rights advocates, activists and more with our tools and resources. Prior to WITNESS she spent time as publicist at Aperture, the fine photography foundation, and later worked at PixelPress, a multimedia company for social change where she produced projects such as “The End of Polio,” with UNICEF and WHO which featured the work of world-renowned photojournalist Sebastiao Salgado. Matisse was named one of Foreign Policy’s 2012 Womeratti, 100 women to follow on Twitter. Matisse holds a BA in History and Latin American Studies from New York University. She speaks English, Spanish and basic Portuguese.
