Team WITNESS Bikes the Five Boros in Style

On Sunday, May 3, Team WITNESS brought their A-game to the 2015 TD Five Boro Bike Tour. Sporting WITNESS orange jerseys and led by our fearless Executive Director Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, the team blazed through the streets of New York – proudly supporting human rights defenders around the world while enjoying the glorious morning sun.

If you blinked, you might have missed front-runner and repeat WITNESS rider Betty Jo Moore, who zipped through 40 miles and five boros in a New York minute (er…few hours). And hailing all the way from Ireland, WITNESS Board member Helen Enright and her son Richard made the event a family affair. The mother-son duo shared the road – and their passion for human rights change – with dedication and good humor. And because 40 miles of cycling fun just wasn’t enough, they’ve both pledged to return for next year’s Bike Tour, raising the challenge to the WITNESS staff while they were at it!

Meanwhile, newcomer Matt Hamilton more than held his own, bringing plenty of enthusiasm to energize the team as they rode through the concrete jungle where dreams are made of.

Together, our small but mighty team has raised over $8,700 (and counting) towards WITNESS’ programs – smashing their collective goal of $5,000 and far surpassing last year’s total. We’re already looking ahead to next year’s Bike Tour, with Helen and Richard at our side, as we raise money and awareness for citizen witnesses everywhere.
